Nobody from Grim Crag appeared to have noticed my attempts to sniff out security spells, but when we advanced down the street, a clamour drifted down the row of houses. The house at the far end was around twice the size of the others, wide and squat with red-painted doors. On the doors, someone had affixed a handwritten sign that read Coven Meeting in Progress.

Based on the volume of the noise, I thought most of the town was inside the house, which meant we’d be outnumbered the instant we went inside. It would also prove an issue if the police did show up, wanting to examine Fenton’s body—or worse, the inspector.

“Should we talk to Alana first?” I whispered to Tam. “If she’s not with the coven, I think this might be our only chance to talk to her before they realise we’re here.”

“Talk to her about what?” Maurice’s manner had only worsened after I’d failed to unearth any magical barriers at the village’s border, though I had to wonder if he’d be able to read Alana’s mind when she wasn’t around the others. If the spell keeping him from reading people’s thoughts didn’t cover the entire village, it must have limits, surely.

“For a start, we can explain to her that the chimera wasn’t responsible for the murders,” I said. “Ask if she went out last night too. I doubt she did, but she might have heard something…”

Someone else came walking from the direction of the seafront—specifically, the Viking-looking man who we’d spoken to the previous day. What was his name again? Walter?

“You’re back,” he observed.

“We are,” Tam said. “I take it you found out about Fenton’s death?”

“Everyone did.” His expression pinched, his gaze travelling from the red-painted doors to our group. “You were going to go inside, but you changed your minds. Why?”

“What’s it to you?” Maurice challenged him.

Tam stepped in. “We intended to see if any of the town’s citizens were willing to talk to us alone before we approached the coven again. I understand that this is a difficult time for all of you, but we believe Fenton’s death is connected to the two tourists whose murders we’re investigating.”

Come to think of it, Walter had led us to talk to Alana in the first place, so maybe he was worth speaking to again. He gave us a considering look. “You’re the ones who found Fenton’s body, are you not?”

“We are,” Tam said. “Did you know him well?”

“No.” He lowered his gaze. “I was afraid this might happen. We’re vulnerable here, after all.”

Strange of him to say, given that Scarlet evidently thought her people were capable of taking care of themselves. “I thought the coven was dedicated to protecting all the villagers.”

He turned towards me but didn’t quite meet my eyes. “There are some … some threats that even the coven cannot handle, as much as Scarlet wishes it were otherwise.”

“What do you mean?” Tam asked. “Do you know what might have killed Fenton?”

He shook his head. “I don’t, but I sincerely hope Scarlet urges everyone to stay at home until the threat has passed.
